T House
2013

Type: house

Location: 6709 Vireo Cove Drive   Austin, Texas

T House’s modern aesthetic is rooted in the movement explored by the Case Study houses of the mid 20th century. Like those transcendental houses, T House’s architecture is one of openness, honesty, simplicity, and integration with nature. Its minimalist style compliments its next door neighbor, Plus House, another project of our firm (and proud past participant of the Austin Modern Home Tour). The one-story T House takes its name from its shape as seen from above. The exterior is an exercise in volume composition. One wing of the ‘T’ consists of a main low, long volume positioned parallel to the street. This wing is intersected perpendicularly by a taller, larger volume. Both volumes converge into one another, at the home’s main entrance. The low parallel volume ‘floats’ above the ground level, by way of a 2 ft. ribbon window at the interface between the floor and wall planes. This element culminates in a limestone clad wall, which not only accents the entry, but adds a textured natural material to an otherwise sharply smooth exterior. A third volume completes the composition by adding a taller element for contrast in forms. Inside, one wing contains three bedrooms including the master suite, and two bathrooms. The other wing includes a two-car garage, an additional bedroom/office suite with a separate entrance from the exterior, and laundry. It also includes the completely open kitchen, dining, and living great room, with massive 12’-6” ceilings. All rooms connect with the exterior by way of expansive windows or sliding glass doors. The T shape creates a rear yard with complete privacy which becomes the extension of the interior spaces. A wet weather creek wraps around the rear yard that is partially shaded by mature oaks, willows, and maples. In unison with the Plus House, the T House strives toward the ideals of the predecessors of the Case Study houses of the mid 20th century, but in the context of a young millennium.
